Beach Volleyball Grand Slam at the Waldbühne Berlin

FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour to take place in Berlin / Further highlights in summer 2012 ranging from Herbert Grönemeyer via Die Ärzte to Berliner Philharmoniker

Berlin, February 2012. From the 10th to the 15th of July 2012 the Waldbühne Berlin will be hosting the FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam tournament. For the first time since 2008 some of the greatest international beach volleyball stars are going to compete in a major tournament in Berlin – at Europe’s most stunning outdoor venue.

In the open air of this unique setting the world’s best beach volleyball players will be contending for prize money as well as world ranking points. All this will take place on a centre court created with 300 tons of sand in the Waldbühne’s infield plus an additional side court on the bell tower parking lot.   „Being able to use the Waldbühne for this tournament is truly fantastic. This location is famous all around the globe“, says Werner von Moltke, President of the German Volleyball Association (Deutscher Volleyball-Verband e.V.). After four years’ absence the international beach volleyball scene finally returns to Berlin with a major official Grand Slam tournament.

„We are happy to bring such a spectacular international sports event to Berlin’s Waldbühne. This arena is located right in the middle of the Olympiapark, the city’s most significant sports complex – which makes it the perfect venue for this tournament “, says Rainer Appel, CTS EVENTIM Vice President.

Apart from this sportive climax, there will be numerous musical highlights on offer at the Waldbühne Berlin in summer. The season opens on the 31st of May with Herbert Grönemeyer’s continued „Schiffsverkehr“-tour.  This will be followed by the Berliner Philharmoniker’s customary End of Season Concert on June 24th and another classical treat on July 29th, starring the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim. From August 17th to 19th Die Ärzte are going to rock the stage on three successive nights to celebrate the grand finale of their current tour. Two of these three shows (on the 18th and 19th of August) are already sold out. The appearance of the German “Schlager”phenomenon Dieter Thomas Kuhn (August 25th) and the 14th Berlin Torchlight Concert (September 15th) have meanwhile become traditional Waldbühne happenings.

More highlights are currently in preparation, as Rainer Appel explains: „We have received various other requests for the 2012 season. Hence, it is very likely that additional events will be announced soon.”
